Accumulo 1.8.1-rc0

Michael Wall
Accumulo Developers,

Please consider the following candidate for Accumulo 1.8.1.  This is not a
VOTE, simply information so you can get started testing.  Expect an RC1 and
a vote next week unless issues are found with this candidate.

Git Commit:
    49420c3d8e6268d4c54efdd95cf457360facfbe8
Branch:
    1.8.1-rc0

If this was an actual vote, a gpg-signed tag would be created:
    git tag -f -m 'Apache Accumulo 1.8.1' -s rel/1.8.1
49420c3d8e6268d4c54efdd95cf457360facfbe8

Staging repo:
https://repository.apache.org/content/repositories/orgapacheaccumulo-1060
Source (official release artifact):
https://repository.apache.org/content/repositories/orgapacheaccumulo-1060/org/apache/accumulo/accumulo/1.8.1/accumulo-1.8.1-src.tar.gz
Binary:
https://repository.apache.org/content/repositories/orgapacheaccumulo-1060/org/apache/accumulo/accumulo/1.8.1/accumulo-1.8.1-bin.tar.gz
(Append ".sha1", ".md5", or ".asc" to download the signature/hash for a
given artifact.)

All artifacts were built and staged with:
    mvn release:prepare && mvn release:perform

Signing keys are available at https://www.apache.org/dist/accumulo/KEYS
(Expected fingerprint: 3E38C02F85303BAB37EE58C2F899DBF0B8C3D406)

Release notes have not been started yet.

Nevermind!  It looks like my the Fedora maven package was too new!  It was
using a snapshot version of Maven 3.4.0

Re: Accumulo 1.8.1-rc0

Mike Miller
Ran "mvn verify" on my Fedora rawhide VM.
org.apache.accumulo.start.classloader.vfs.providers.VfsClassLoaderTest
Time elapsed: 15.849 sec  <<< ERROR!
java.lang.RuntimeException: Error setting up mini cluster
Caused by: java.io.IOException: Timed out waiting for Mini HDFS Cluster to
start

This could be another problem with rawhide.  I will setup a different VM
and try again.

Thanks for looking at this Mike.  Those ITs fail periodically, but I did
get every test to pass at least once.

Re: Accumulo 1.8.1-rc0

I ran through my usual checks and it looks good to me. I don't see any
substantial differences in the build or the ITs compared with 1.8.0. I also
did a manual diff to look for API changes, and didn't notice any.

Re: Accumulo 1.8.1-rc0

Josh Elser-2
In reply to this post by Michael Wall
More of the same from me.

```
Failed tests:
   RollWALPerformanceIT.testWalPerformance:126->testWalPerformanceOnce:121
   UnorderedWorkAssignerReplicationIT.dataWasReplicatedToThePeer:267
Drain did not finish within 30 seconds
```

Sigs/xsums on the tarballs was good. L&N on the src looked fine, and I
did a quick skim of the files changed since 1.8.0 to dbl check that L&N
didn't need to change. I assume the bin tarball is the same.

That RollWalPerformanceIT is an annoyance -- the replication one is
probably unnecessarily flakey.

Looking good to be a VOTE to me, Mike Wall.

Hard to say definitively, but those replication ones might either be
slowness on the host you ran them on or related to the hostname
configuration. I think we've seen cases where malformed /etc/hosts
entries can cause those tests to fail.

A quick check would be to make sure you have 127.0.0.1 for localhost and
IP addr for the FQDN and short-name.

Re: Accumulo 1.8.1-rc0

Christopher Tubbs-2
If you're using systemd, for example on CentOS 7, I've found that using
libnss_myhostname works really well (avoids having to edit /etc/hosts), and
makes the name lookup for localhost match your local hostname:

To use it, edit the /etc/nsswitch.conf file and make sure your hosts line
looks something like:

hosts: files myhostname dns

More likely, though, they're just unstable tests. The Replication ones tend
to get stuck on drain (previously discussed, possibly open issue, might be
related to thrift), and the others are very sensitive to performance
characteristics of your environment, because they follow the very unstable
pattern of: "time(action) -> A, change some setting, time(action) -> B,
assert B << A".
